Low Back Pain
Pain is never fun, and nothing can slow a bizymom down like a bout of low back pain. Many different things can cause low back pain, but one of the most common is a fixated joint in the lumbar spine. The lumbar spine consists of five bones in the lower spinal column (see photo) called vertebrae. Vertebrae have eight joints surrounding them, nine if we include the intervertebral disk (IVD), which is itself a joint. Joints are structures between bones that allow movement. The eight spinal joints, excluding the disk, are synovial joints. Synovial joints () are surrounded by a sac on each end, called the synovial sac, and this is where synovium (the joint’s natural lubricant) is produced. Synovial sacs can get bound up and “lock-up” a joint. When a joint gets locked-up or fixated—that is, when it loses its ability to move through its full range of motion—it is called a vertebral subluxation, or just subluxation.
Subluxations cause pain, swelling, and muscle spasms. Even worse, subluxations can irritate sensitive nerve tissue as it exits the spine causing severe pain, an inability to walk upright or stand, or even sciatica. If you’ve ever had sharp, burning, electrical pain shooting down the back of your leg, then you’ve met sciatica. Sciatica and low back pain together is a surefire way to keep you out of work, out of family functions and essentially out of commission.
But don’t despair if you are feeling any of these symptoms, because there is help. Subluxations and nerve irritation are the specialty of chiropractors. Chiropractors open up fixated joints, and bring back the spine’s normal motion. When joints regain their ability to move freely, muscle spasms reduce, as does swelling, and any irritation of the nerve tissue diminishes over time. Essentially, the hurting person regains their function and they are back to work, back to Little League, and back to life—just the way it’s supposed to be.
If you are having low back pain, stiffness, or sciatica, don’t hesitate—visit your local chiropractor. You will be happy you did.
