R. Gary Raham grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan. He graduated with degrees in biology and found a teaching home in the small town of Akron, in eastern Colorado. He pursued art and writing as hobbies, but after two years teaching high school and junior high biology, looked for ways to combine all his interests. He married Sharon, the girls’ PE teacher in Akron at the time, and moved to Fort Collins where he worked as a graphic artist and honed his skills as a writer and illustrator.

Gary wrote both science fiction and science fact, selling a few articles to Highlights for Children and other markets before finding a publisher for his first book, DINOSAURS IN THE GARDEN, in 1988. Gary has now written 13 books of either science fact or science fiction and many nature articles for newspapers and magazines. He served as Co-Regional advisor for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators from 2000-2003 and is a member of the Colorado Author’s League, as well as Science Fiction Writers of America.

THE DEEP TIME DIARIES (Fulcrum, 2000), a science fiction novel Gary wrote for middle school students, serves as a resource for a number of schools in Colorado and elsewhere teaching Earth science and creative writing. TEACHING SCIENCE FACT WITH SCIENCE FICTION (Teacher Ideas Press, 2004) also gives teachers many tools for using science fiction to jump start student interest in science.

Marshall Cavendish released Gary’s most recent book, BUGS THAT KILL, in 2008. Next year Gary looks forward to seeing FOSSILS, a title he wrote for Chelsea House in their Restless Earth Series for middle school students.
