New Year's Resolutions for New Moms
New beginnings give us the opportunity to examine who we are, where we are going and whether or not we are moving in the direction that best meets our needs. As we approach a new year, take time to look at your challenges, your priorities and make changes that will positively impact your life and the lives of those you love.
List five (5) goals you would like to accomplish for the coming year. Read your list over a couple of times and be sure that is what you want for yourself. Then, put them in the order of importance. Identify which goal you would like to accomplish first, second, and so on.
Go back and look at the first goal you set for yourself. Make a list of possible strategies to attain that goal. Put together a realistic time line so that you have an idea of when you plan to complete the goal. The following is an example:
Goal #1: Lose 10 pounds
Strategies to attain goal:
1. Buy more fruits and vegetables
2. Exercise 30 minutes every day
3. Eat whole grains
4. Avoid foods with lots of sugar
5. Plan healthy meals
Date expected to reach this goal: 10 weeks (Losing 1 pound a week)
Once you have achieved your number one goal, go onto the next. It is important to just focus on one goal at a time, experience success and then move on down the list.
It also helps to visualize your goals and stay positive. In the example above, imagine yourself buying healthy foods, see yourself finding time to exercise and keep in mind that you will succeed.
More importantly than anything is to be good to yourself and avoid self punishment. If you find it difficult to meet your time line or lose your momentum, just regroup, reprioritize and start over again. When making positive changes, sometimes we need to take two steps forward and one step back. The good news is that with this model, you are still moving in the right direction!
“To believe in yourself and to follow your dreams, to have goals in life and a drive to succeed, and to surround yourself with the things and the people that make you happy - this is success!” - Sasha Azevedo
