Do you dream about geometric proofs? Do you love solving complex equations in your head while going about your household chores? Do you get giddy at the thought of integrals and derivatives? No? Neither do I. I'm not sure how many people would love math that much, but it certainly doesn't describe every homeschool parent. This makes you wonder how mere mortals manage. With a sound understanding of arithmetic, but only a tenuous grasp on algebra, how can parents teach high school math to their children? As it turns out, they do it with help. Homeschool math programs often have wonderful explanatory video programs. Parents don't need to teach math at all. Using those great video explanations, you can allow the programs to do the teaching, leaving the parent almost off the hook. If you aren’t a practicing theoretical mathematician, you might give that type of curriculum a try when you “hit the wall” in math. Perhaps it will help to recognize that almost everyone hits the wall in math. Even nurses (like me) and engineers (like my husband.) will come to high school math concept they don't remember. You too may have once had a perfect grasp of these topics, but the emotional energy needed to regain a sense of competence may be beyond your grasp right now. You don’t have to fear! Whether you lose understanding in pre-algebra or pre-calculus, the solution is the same. Help sometimes comes in the form of a CD or DVD. If you don't know where to begin, then start with some common homeschool math solutions. Teaching Textbooks and Saxon Math with DIVE CDs are popular, but there are many others to choose from. No matter what, do NOT panic. Math IS hard, and it's worth the struggle. Once you have done this, you can do anything! This struggle will one day make a marvelous college application essay. And you know, Pre-calculus is already a VERY impressive accomplishment.
