How to Become a Professional Resume Writer

If you are a freelance writer or you just love to write then you may want to explore the possibility of becoming a professional resume writer. Professional resume writers can earn over six figures per year and if you are good enough at writing then you can do this in less than 40 hours per week.

In order to get your feet wet as a professional resume writer it is a good idea that you first get training in order to do so. There are many courses that are taught online and even in some colleges that will train you in the proper way to put a resume together. Additionally you will learn the ins and outs of different industries and have an opportunity to learn the different styles of resume formats that exist in today’s job market.

The next logical step after some training is finding a position with a resume writing service or starting your own resume writing service. Many people will choose to work for a service, at least at first, in order to learn and give themselves a chance to hone their skills. This also gives you a chance to see what the business is all about and which resumes pique your interest the most. While some people like writing sales resumes, others enjoy Government resumes.

After you have been a professional resume writer for two years you can then go through the process of becoming a certified resume writer. This designation is very prestigious and lets everyone who you do business with know that you are the cream of the crop as far as resume writing goes. While there are a number of designations that can be obtained the most notable and one of the most well respected is the National Certified Resume Writer, otherwise known as the NCRW.

One of the requirements to achieving this distinction is to join the Resume Writers Association. You will then need to take courses and accumulate credits. Once you have accumulated ten credits you can then begin to study for all the applicable tests associated with the designation and once you pass them all you will be official.

You do not have to have any designations in order to be a professional resume writer, but having them will always help you and never hinder you as a professional resume writer. People by and large like to feel secure when they are spending money on a service and hiring someone to write a resume is no different. Just knowing that you took the time and initiative to get the designation shows all of your potential clients that you are serious about your resume writing work.

Becoming a professional resume writer is a task that will require a good bit of dedication on your part, but the rewards will be almost endless. Writing a resume is a true talent and those who are the best at it get paid handsomely. If you have a talent for writing and have an interest in writing resumes for a living then you may just have what it takes to become a professional resume writer.
