Homeschoolers Curriculum: Measure Twice, Cut Once

There are many great proverbs in this world, but this one is awesome!

Measure Twice, Cut Once

When you measure once, it's SO easy to make a mistake, But measuring twice, you don't have to keep cutting and cutting until you get it right. It saves you money when you don't waste materials.

That's why it works for homeschooler's curriculum, too!

Measure twice
When you are looking at a curriculum, measure it against two things - your needs and your child's learning style. It has to fit both of you, and if it only matches one then it may be a mistake. What do YOU need? Freedom, or hand-holding? Gallons of information, or bullet-points? And what is your child's learning style? Visual, auditory, kinesthetic? Do they learn best with books or experiences? Measure curriculum with what you need from the curriculum AND what your child needs in a curriculum.

Cut once
A curriculum that matches will only require you to cut ONE check. It would be nice to think that you only have to pay for English curriculum once, but veteran homeschoolers know that sooner or later there will be a mismatch. At some point you will have to purchase a replacement curriculum. Measure twice before purchasing, and you increase the chance that you'll only have to cut one check.

Measuring Curriculum
As children get older, curriculum for homeschool becomes less and less about the parents. As teens begin to learn independently, it's more about them and their needs. When you no longer explain every math concept, critique every word they write, or read aloud every subject area, it's no longer a curriculum that has to fit you. As teens get older, it's more about what fits the teenager. The curriculum that fits them is more likely to be successful.
