While I wouldn’t go so far as to say that there are fashion trends in how you present yourself on social media, I will say that it is important to periodically “brush up” your social media profiles. And the “brushing up” covers a wide range of areas: First, your photo: You don’t need to change it every year. But if you dramatically change your hair style, your hair color, or distinctive glasses, you may want a new headshot so that people meeting you in person can recognize you from your social media profile photos. Of course, this means changing your photo in all your social media profiles -- including your website -- to be consistent. Given how many sites you may be on, it’s probably a good idea to go through your list of site logins to ensure you don’t miss any sites. Second, your bio information: What has changed recently? Have you added or deleted services to your business? Written a new ebook? Maybe you simply want to emphasize a different segment of your business. For example, perhaps you’ve been targeting individuals and now you want to target companies. Make sure your social media profiles reflect your objectives. Third, your name: Have you changed your name? Marriage, divorce, new stage name? Or have you just realized that, when you first joined social media sites, you used “cute” names such as GetMeRewrite and now you want to use your own name across the social media universe. Fourth, your website URL and/or your email: If you now have a new website that you want to feature, make sure you replace the URL of your old website in your social media profiles. Or perhaps you’ve gotten a new email address and you want people to now use this one. Fifth, your social media profile links: Perhaps you’ve now gotten a customized LinkedIn public profile URL or a customized Facebook (business) page URL. You’ll want to substitute these customized URLs for the original URLs. Sixth, your privacy settings: Social media sites such as Facebook appear to erratically change privacy control options. It’s a good idea to revisit these options on the social media sites on which you are active in order to ensure that the privacy controls are set at the level you prefer. Caution: No matter how strict a site promises its privacy controls are, NEVER put anything online that you wouldn’t be comfortable with the entire world seeing, because you never know. In conclusion, as social media can be extremely powerful in making connections for your brand or business, be sure that your social media profiles are up-to-date.
