Do You Have "The Homeschool Disease"?

Do you have "The Homeschool Disease" of over-achieving in English? It's tempting to get excited about all the great curriculum out there. You may want to buy it all and use it all. You may even be tempted to teach ALL English skills all in the same year. Over-teaching can cause burn-out though. You don't want your children to work TOO hard and then end up hating it. You want them to work hard enough to learn, but not so hard they burn out.

I suggest a simple rule of thumb. Measure English by time. One hour per day of work. Work includes writing, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, etc. Then they spend some time reading, perhaps another hour.

I was speaking with a client today, and she was using the following great choices for English next year: Sonlight Literature, Progeny Press Study Guides, Character Quality Language Arts, and Instituted for Excellence in Writing, and SAT preparation. It's not humanly possibly to complete all of that curriculum in one year. So here is what I suggested. Teach from those sources for just one hour a day, and do some reading at night. One day do Progeny Press, one day use CQLA, one day do IEW, one day do an essay, and one day prep for the SAT. Naturally she won't actually FINISH any of those curriculum choices next year, but her child will certainly be learning, and can earn 1 credit in high school English.

Consider this goal for your homeschool English. No matter how much curriculum purchased, the goal is one hour of work and one hour of reading.
