An Interview with Dr. Matthew R. Carpenter on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Matthew R. Carpenter is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. Very simply, porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to your teeth. They are one of the BEST ways to conservatively enhance the look and feel of your teeth.  With veneers you are able to control the color, shape, and size of your teeth to create the smile you have always wanted.  Sometimes teeth can even be straightened using veneers.  If you have ever wanted to change the appearance of your smile, veneers may be a great option.

Q. How long do dental veneers last?

A. Veneers can last 30 or 40 years!  It is impossible to predict exactly how long your veneers will last due to variables such as oral hygiene, diet, clenching and grinding, occlusion, etc.  However, materials and techniques have improved remarkably, and when cared for properly, veneers can last for a VERY long time.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. Proper brushing, flossing and wearing a nightguard to prevent grinding and clenching are essential to increase the life of your veneers.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. There are ALWAYS options in dentistry.  If veneers are not an option, crowns or composite bonding may be good alternatives.  Come in for a free consultation to determine what options will best meet your goals.

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A. There are certainly some people out there whose veneers look VERY unnatural.  With proper training and skill, however, veneers can look so real that they will fool even dentists!  Great communication and a great lab technician are extremely important in order to provide beautiful and natural looking veneers.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. No.  Veneers do not protect your teeth from decay.  Proper oral hygiene is still essential for cavity prevention.

Q. How much does veneer cost?

A. Cost can vary greatly from office to office.  Remember that sometimes you get what you pay for.  A highly skilled lab technician/ceramist (the one who makes the veneers behind the scenes) can be very costly for the dentist resulting in a higher fee per veneer.  For a nice result, it is worth paying a little extra to get veneers from a highly trained dentist and a highly skilled ceramist.  Free cosmetic consultations can provide some figures of what it might cost for you and how we can help you get that gorgeous smile you’ve always wanted.

Q. How to contact Dr. Carpenter if we have further questions?
