My story, in some ways, is not unlike others you might have read over the years. I want to share it with you in the hopes it will be an inspiration and an example of how perseverance and belief in yourself is key to being successful. I won’t go into all the details of my life, but will admit life has thrown me my share of challenges! My name is Sandy Louth and I own & operate AdminSpecialties, a Virtual Assistance company. It is operated from my home office.
For over 20 years, I had always worked as an Administrative Assistant in some capacity, yet always dreamed of having my own business. I have worked for Accountants, Software companies, large corporations and small self owned companies. The last company I worked for required at least 2 ½ to 3 hours of traffic each day. T hen I would do work for them at home in the evenings and on weekends, in addition. YUK! I enjoyed what I did, just not how I was required to do it. Even with other jobs in the past, there was always work done from home and then sent by courier or email. In a sense, I was performing Virtual Assistance long before it became popular.
I wanted to take the “leap” and it took me a while to do it. I had an outdated dilapidated computer system, a garage sale printer, a nasty table from the barn for a desk and frankly, I was scared to death! I wanted this really bad and my husband gave me the support I needed to carry on. I researched many ideas on the internet and ran across all of the “to good to be true” scams and others that made me think I didn’t have it so bad after all. I knew I was good at what I had done for so long, so it made perfect sense to continue doing admin work. I found all of the Virtual Assistant articles, Universities, Clubs, etc. So many of them seemed to be a copy of the last one and I just didn’t see why I would want to bid against others for work. Not to mention losing out to someone in India! I simply wanted to sell my services based on my experience! I’m not a saleswoman, but I do believe in myself and my abilities.
I was driving home one evening (actually sitting in the lovely traffic) thinking of names for my company. I came up with 4 or 5 and then my husband and I went over them that night. AdminSpecialties just said everything I wanted the name to say and that was it. After securing the company name and domain, I created a basic website and immediately started posting ads on some of the free ad services available on the internet. A few short days later, I had 3 clients and others showing an interest. They were all eager to try this “Virtual Thing” and willing to pay what I was asking for. I continued working my full time job and then would stay up late at night taking care of “my clients”. It was time to make a decision. My husband told me I should quit my job and pursue this full time. I actually discussed this idea with my boss at the time and told him I could do everything I do for him from home. He was not at all wild about the idea and needless to say, I was now in a position to pursue my dream. Our families had their opinions, doubts and not many encouraging words…but I followed my heart and did it anyway, with no regrets!
AdminSpecialties has grown so much, and now my husband Michael and I both do this full time! No more “back breaking” work for him now. (Well…almost none!) We have clients in several states and abroad. Oh, I have to tell you something else. One of my best clients is the last gentleman I worked for! No more dilapidated computer system either, as we both have new up to date systems, multiple printers and loads of software.
I have accomplished a lot and my dream has come true. Not only do I have my own successful business; Michael & I have the opportunity to be with each other and share the rewards together!
If I had to give advice to someone, I would have to say to follow your heart, shy away from negative influence and most of all, believe in yourself. The greatest wealth you will ever achieve is the wealth within your heart.
