About television and addiction

As the saying goes, too much of a good thing can be bad. So we must be careful not to make television and addition synonymous...

Television and Addiction Can Become Synonymous

The fact that television can be addictive is slowly starting to become more than a famous catchphrase, as intensive scientific studies of people’s viewing habits are starting to show that watching television seems to be like getting addicted to alcohol or drugs!

Nowadays, compulsive viewers turn to the television when they are feeling distressed or sad, rather than watching it just for pleasure. Though they get a temporary relief, in fact, they end up feeling worse later, so they must be careful not to make television and addiction synonymous.

Researchers are unable to agree on a definition for ‘television addicts’, but, people who self-proclaim themselves as ‘television addicts’ spend twice the amount of time on TV. One study found that self – described addicts watch nearly 56 hours a week, while the average is about 30 hours. Though these people tend to be unhappy about their addiction, they seem powerless to do anything about it.

Some desperate parents go to the TV as a solution for ‘that child who keeps bugging me all the time’. This has some dire consequences, in that these children are watching TV all the time, and as a result, get the addictive behavior early on in their life.

The main reason for television addiction must be the fact that its entertainment 24/7, which would mean that people can be entertained any time of the day, and there always seem to be something amusing going on, which keeps the viewers hooked on to the TV, and prevents him from going outside and doing something else useful.

People seem to feel less spirited when they stop watching television, despite the fact that they condone it. Their spirits seem to be lifted by a very little bit as soon as the ‘idiot-box’ was on, but, according to researchers, this ‘little bit’ seemed enough to get them hooked on to the television.

With the type of shows that seem to be on TV these days, its hardly surprising that more and more people are getting addicted to TV. Their depiction of some inanely crazy stuff make them all the more addictive as you very well know that you may never see or experience something like that in real life. For e.g. the popular TV series ‘Lost’ shows how the survivors of a plane crash manage to survive in a totally deserted island. There is a very small chance that we may be actually involved in a plane crash (that too with all our friends), so we seem to be really interested in how they manage with egoistic people, without supplies, basically without ANYTHING!
