The Best TV Series on Air Today

(In no particular order)

1. 24

What really sets the tone for the success of this show is the fact that the script is written in such a way that the events in the show take place within a day (24 hours), making it one of the best tv series on air today. This show tells about the life of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) who is working for the Los Angeles Counter Terrorism unit, which is trying to eradicate terrorism from the country. Though it has won an Emmy and Golden Globe award, much criticism has been directed toward the fact that it portrays Muslims as ‘terrorists’ and shows torture beign used to gain information from the terrorists.

2. Lost

‘Lost’s one of those shows where you can’t wait for the next episode (you may even go to the studios and steal a copy of the next epi). It follows the experiences of people on a mysterious island, after their passenger jet crashes somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. For those of you who are already watching it, any signs of “Lost” withdrawal syndrome are perfectly normal.

3. Heroes

An up- and- coming TV show which was cut short, to the dismay of nearly 13.1 million viewers, Heroes is another one of those shows like Lost. The main subject of the show is the life of ordinary people who discover that they have superpower abilities, and how they adapt to the changes these abilities bring, and how they use these abilities to save humanity from the threat of evil forces. Doug Elfman of the Chicago Sun-Times stated, "The show's super strengths are its well-developed filmmaking, smooth pacing and a perfect cast. It views like the first hour of a fun, thoughtful movie." Finally, a science-fiction TV show that’s actually enjoyable!

4. House, M.D.

More popularly known as “House”, this is one of the few shows which manages to incorporate sentiment, suspense, and comedy. Set in a fictional teaching hospital in New Jersey, Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) is a maverick medical genius who, along with his team of doctors, try to solve the most complex and subtle medical cases in the country. What really gives this show flavor is the acting of Laurie, who does very well portraying a character which has been described as “cynic”, “misanthrope” and “curmudgeon”.

5. Grey’s Anatomy

Deriving its title from the popular medical handbook by Henry Gray, Grey’s Anatomy revolves around the lives (both professional and personal) of 5 interns and their supervisor. By giving the show the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot, ABC acknowledged the success of the show. Fans have also given the show ‘2 thumbs up’, the success being reflected in the fact that it ended up in the top 10 shows of the 2007-2008 season.
