10 Movies You Should Watch at Least Once

1) Casablanca- This 1942 film bases it’s theme on World War and follows the story of one man’s dilemma-having to choose between doing the right thing and doing what’s best for the woman he loves. You should watch this film not only because it’s good but because it’s an icon.

2) Gone with the Wind- Anyone who has read the book knows that a film adaptation should be something to look forward to. The film is as much about the love affair between the leading characters as it is about a Southern perspective of the Civil War and its aftermath. The movie won a record ten Academic Awards.

3) Schindler's List- Movies based on war typically have compelling themes and this is definitely one of them. The best part about this movie is that it’s biographical. It’s about the story of a German businessman in Nazi-rule Poland, who ends up saving over a thousand Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust.

4) The Notebook – This 2004 romance movie was simple and yet extraordinary. It brings to life themes such as enduing love, commitment and respect, which beckon women of all ages. This is a tear-jerker, so get the tissues out!

5) The Extra-Terrestrial – Spielberg’s genius is reflected film which is sombre in mood but has scenes that tug at our heartstrings. There’s no fancy sci-fi stuff. Instead the movie focuses on the difficult, mundane life of a single mum that becomes very complicated when an alien enters their lives. E.T. is not all about a space voyager’s adventure; it’s about friendship too.

6) The World is Beautiful - Another film based on World War II, this 1997 Italian production captured the hearts of millions. The story is made even richer by the way it’s told. The movie doesn’t try to be overly sombre about the plight of Jews, it does almost the opposite and succeeds in making us feel more.

7)Finding Nemo - Even if you are not an animation fan, this cute film will draw you in. Combined with amazing visuals and sincere dialogues, it captures universal ideas and is for the young and old alike.

8) The Shawshank Redemption - This plot driven movie never won an Oscar but it’s one of the best movies of all time. It’s about one man’s long struggle to escape a corrupt prison system and how justice wins in the end.

9) Sound of Music - Starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, this musical is a timeless classic and sure to be loved by women. The von Trapp children and Maria are particularly endearing during their numerous songs together.

10)The Lord of the Rings - This fantasy appeals to all audiences through, breathtaking scenery, digital effects and of course its grand tale. Definitely not one to miss!
