Performance Music |
Be it the feelings of happiness, anger, sorrow, fury or horror, music is able to convey any of these feelings and messages easily and effectively to people of all natures and disciplines. Since music is also regarded as the only method of effective communication for those of all ages, its significance has increased and therefore is highly sought and listened to.
Most music artistes not only end their task by composing music, but also end up performing it, thus enabling them to accrue new fans from all disciplines. This article aims to highlight what performance music is, and where and how would such performances take place in order to lead to a highly successful one.
Musical Performance could be defined as the physical presentation or expression of music. This generally occurs when the composer or creator of music is happy with the work he/she has done and believes that the instrumentation and structure of that musical work is fair and acceptable. However, the original musical work could change with the use of new instruments and audience preferences, as it gets performed.
A musical piece, which is very well planned and perfected by an artiste or musician can be said to be a highly successful performance. However, such a great and successful performance is often an outcome of a lot of practice and rehearsals. Nevertheless, a performance could also be extemporized or in other words, improvised (that is, done at the spur of the moment without no prior arrangement and preparation). Hence, a performance could either be rehearsed or improvised.
Improvisation of a musical idea, as mentioned before is where it is created impromptu (then and there) such as a song sung using harmonies or a guitar solo. Rehearsal, on the other hand is a vigorous practice and repetition of a musical idea until it has achieved cohesion and excellence. What musicians usually do is to add some improvisation to a well-practiced musical idea in order to produce a unique and excellent performance.
Music can be performed either solo or as a group. For example, apparent in Indian Classical music and Western Art music are the strong traditions of solo performance, whilst it is group performance in cultures such as Bali. However, you could mostly find cultures that have a mixture of both (solo and group performance music) and these performances could be either impromptu or ones which are highly planned and organized performances such as musical pageants and concerts, competitions, festivals and religious processions. Elton John, Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Celine Dion and Michael Jackson are some of the great solo music performers, whereas Linkin Park, P.O.D., Nickelback, Backstreet Boys and Westlife are some of the main world class groups that play and perform music.
Music performances were usually held indoors in the early days, but now has expanded to such an extent (nowadays) that most performances are held outdoors, which creates more room for a bigger audience. A concert hall, musical theatre, a club or chill out lounge, or possibly a hotel (or reception hall) are examples of places where a musical performance could be held indoors. Other arenas such as a stadium, field or some open area are examples of places where an outdoor musical performance could be held/ presented.
Usually, there are different time periods for specific musical performances be it a music competition, concert, opera, recital or operetta. This could be a daily, weekly, monthly, annually or even biannually, (that is at different time periods and intervals).
What should be known is that a performance of a musical piece or music idea is a must in order to gain recognition and wide acceptance, so that it enables the quick accumulation of fans and expansion of an artiste’s fan base. |
