About judging a book |
|
As the old saying goes, you shouldn't be judging a book by its cover. Take its contents into consideration first. |

Judging a Book By Its Cover |
Remember the famous saying ‘Never judge a book by its cover?’
Usually we use this phrase to describe a person, a place or an event through its advertising. What if we take this saying on its word value, rather than seeing the words as a proverb as we used to? What about a book in reality? Can we always judge it by its cover?
Remember those books with colorful covers you tend to reach for first in the book shelves? After reading them, have they all looked up to your expectations built by the cover image? Did you gain the knowledge you required, did you understand the books contents, did you enjoy reading it, was it entertaining, was it heart capturing? In short, did judging a book by its cover meet your requirements?
What about those books with the boring covers you tend to read on and off? Maybe they carried a far more interesting tale in a far more interesting manner that suited your interests and requirements. Maybe you would never know if they do, as you wouldn’t bother to reach for those books in the first place.
Many good authors never got far because of a lousy cover which doesn’t boost sales, and some not so good authors get a good sale at least for the initial period through the impression received through a great cover design.
Where the consumers go wrong is that they tend to forget that most of the time, the cover designer is not the author and vice verse. How ever much the cover designer tries to match the tale within, no one can picture the tale better than the author himself or an enthusiastic reader.
It all goes to say that it’s not the cover but the book which should attract you. Get into the habit of reading the summary of the book at the back of the book or the introduction pages of the book before purchasing it.
Go through the book reviews which may be available on newspapers and the web, to get a better image of the books contents rather than relying on the cover. Book reviews will help you to get a good understanding about the contents of a book through its summarization and critical analysis of the book/article.
The colorfulness of the cover doesn’t speak much about its contents. It may or may not picture the real image within, as many book readers would have experienced by now.
Remember the stuff inside matters for books as well as everything else in the world, rather than the outward appearance. |
