The Best Musical Instruments to Look For

Musical instruments are pieces of equipment or tools that are used to produce music and these devices are usually controlled by the player (or the instrumentalist) to produce the preferred sound effects. This article aims to explain what the best musical instruments are, how they are categorized and what instruments belong to those respective categories.

Musical sounds are produced by regular vibrations. Any irregular vibrations are considered as noises. All musical instruments have a part which vibrates. Explained below are the different categories that musical instruments basically fall into.

Stringed instruments

All stringed instruments have got nylon or wire strings, which are stretched and attached to some sort of hollow sound box. The strings can be vibrated by plucking them, passing a sticky bow or by hitting them.

For e.g.:- Harp, Violin, Piano, Guitar, Cello, Double Bass, Sitar, Electric Guitar, Mandolin.

Wind Instruments

The wind instruments produce music when the player blows into them in some way. Air which is enclosed in a pipe or metal tube can be made to vibrate and give out, or produce a musical note.

E.g.:- Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, Trumpets, French Horns, Bag Pipes, Saxophones, Bassoons.

Early wind instruments were made out of wood and from the hollowed out horns of animals. Those made out of wood were called Wood Wind Instruments within the Wind category.

For E.g.:- Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, Bassoons

Later on, metal was used in making instruments and brass was popularly used for this purpose. The instruments so made were referred to as Brass Instruments.

For E.g.:- Trumpets, French Horns, Trombones, Tuba

Percussion Instruments

All percussion instruments are stuck in some way to produce sounds. The most familiar of them, probably are the drums. All the drums have parchments of skin stretched over some type of frame and they are usually hit with a drumstick or by the use of the fingers, palm or hand.

E.g.:- Drum, Bongo, Timpani, Conga

Chest beating, foot stamping and clapping led to the creation of the fist percussion instrument. Other percussion instruments include the Cymbal, Triangle, Castanet, Tambourine, Xylophone, Maraca, Vibraphone, Marimba and Bell.

All musical instruments fit into one of the above categories. The human voice is the first wind instrument. Reeds and Pipes would have followed and a number of such instruments were created. The material out of which these instruments were made greatly affected the sound they produced. The tone quality varies considerably on account of the shape of the instrument and the material it was made from.

Musical instruments are also categorized based on the levels of playing. Some instruments can be played only by experts, whereas some are made for beginners. However, most of the instruments could be played by both beginners and experts both
