Movies are a great source of entertainment but sometimes they do more harm than good. Parents should keep in mind that most movies are made for adult audiences and that they don’t suit young viewers. 1) G-rating- These are for general viewing. You can’t expect a G-rated movie to not have any slang or to avoid the use of guns, although violence will be minimal.

2) PG-rating- This effectively warns parents to check out the movie before they decide to allow kids to watch it. The ‘PG’ stands for parental guidance. In other words, the movie producers will not take any responsibility for the content. Parents are expected to make the decision whether any movie with this rating is suitable for their kids to view. There can be impolite language, nudity and violence in these movies, albeit in brief. Drug use will not be depicted.

3) PG-13 rating- According to the Rating Board, the number in the rating represents the minimal suitable age of the viewer. Parents should decide whether children under 13 years should be allowed to watch because some content can be offensive, although the theme may be innocent enough. Any drug abuse scenes warrant at least this rating. Only a single use of an expletive is allowed in this category.

4) R- rating: This is a red light warning to parents indicating that the theme of the movie is based on adult content. It can contain extreme and persistent violence, explicit nudity and sexuality, drug abuse and multiple uses of expletives. Movies of this nature are definitely not for early teens. Those over 16 years of age or over must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

5) NC-17 rating: Teens are not admitted to cinemas showing this type of movie, not even with adults. Parents should take a cue from this. This rating should not be confused with pornography. Such a movie will contain abnormal behavior, drug abuse, sex and violent scenes (including torture).
