Famous Composers - Some of the Best Composers
of Our Time

Music is something that everybody in the world is very fond of, since it is believed to soothe and pacify the minds of the listeners at any given time. It is also known as a universal language, since anybody could experience and appreciate pieces of music compositions, irrespective of who (what country or background) did it.

There have been a lot of famous music composers from all parts of the world, who helped the development of music, and this article aims to explain the biographies (in brief) of some of the most famous and best composers in the world.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Born in Germany, he is known as the Master of the Baroque period. He wrote all types of music, except operas. He wrote music for the violin, organ and the cello. His famous works were St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, Christmas Oratorio and Mass in B Minor.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Known as the “Father of the String Quartet” and “Father of the Symphony”, he was one of the greatest composers of the classical period. Being an Austrian composer, he was a person responsible for the development of the symphony and sonata, and making classical chamber music fashionable. He wrote over 104 symphonies and 84 string quartets. “The Creation” and “The Seasons” are two of his greatest oratorios. He was Mozart’s friend and Beethoven’s teacher.

Ludwig Van Beethoven (1717-1787)

Beethoven is a world famous, prolific German composer. He was a lonely individual, a genius whose career as a virtuoso pianist was cut short by early deafness. His powerful style of composing, particularly in the symphonies and piano sonatas, caused a stir in late classical times. Some of his works were the 7th symphony, Wellington’s Victory, and the Violin Concerto.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

He was a creative, Austrian composer who belonged to the Classical era. He wrote over 600 works before he died at the young age of 35. His father and sister were musicians and this was what influenced him to get into music. He started composing when he was a child and was a brilliant pianist for his young age. By his later teens, he was writing mature, elegant symphonies, masses, operas and chamber music. Some of his great works were “The Marriage of Figaro” and “The Magic Flute”.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

He was also another famous Austrian composer. He was a great song writer but was just becoming famous when he died at the age of 31. Some of his popular works were the “9th Symphony” and the “Unfinished Symphony”.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856)

Schumann was also another famous German composer, who is well-known for his great works. He was a true romantic, using music to reflect and inspire emotions. He composed songs and piano pieces for concertos, symphonies and chamber works, and some of his greatest works were “Träumerei”, “Warum” and “In der Nacht”.

These prolific and creative composers have produced some of the greatest musical compositions of all times and have also been a great inspiration to the then and present day composers. Their musical compositions and works are still remembered, appreciated and considered the greatest in the history of music.
