What's Involved in Reviewing Books |
To begin with let’s understand what reviews are. Reviews are defined as a critical evaluation of a particular text, event object or phenomenon. Thus reviewing books can be writng a report or essay that offers a critical analysis on a book.
One mistake many see in book reviews is that it tries to summarize the tale/article. But in reality this is not what a review is for. A book review is an article which not only summarizes, but also comments. It is your medium to talk and discuss with the author and other interested readers. Your comments could be positive and/or negative, as it is not a necessity to agree on anything. It is your view that counts on the knowledge displayed in the book/article, the manner in which it was organized, the nature of language, etc.
A review document contains more question formats when stating opinions rather than statements. Reviews are best kept short. Good examples are the reviews available in newspapers and journals, which rarely exceed 1000 words. But lengthier review documents are also available in some instances depending on the material it is subjected to. A review document also gives a personal viewpoint on whether readers as a whole would like this work of literature or not, and why.
When preparing to write a book review, develop your arguments before you pen them down. Has the book covered the subject adequately? Does it meet the expectations set by the title? How is the topic approached? Are the points/arguments in the book/article supported and how and is it sufficient? How is it structured? Does the article/book make sense? Were you convinced? And finally you have to speculate, has the book/article helped you understand the topic and will you recommend it to other interested readers?
Knowing the basics of book reviewing is not enough. To gain a working knowledge on the same, one is advised to read and go through other book reviews, which will help you grasp an understanding of book reviews more intensely.
Practice writing book reviews to gain a working experience on book reviews and writing the same. Though you may feel like it is a tiring task at the beginning, once you gain the experience and learn the style and method of writing book reviews, you would feel it is a good practice. Especially it helps you to build your knowledge and gain more understanding on the book or article you are reviewing. It can also be a good career path too, as the printing field has many opportunities for good review writers. |
