| Dr. Vishakha Gigler is a Board Certified Dermatologist by the American Board of Dermatology. Here the doctor has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Skin Cancer.
Q. What are the main risk factors of skin cancer?
A. The most important risk factors are fair skin, history of excessive sun exposure or sunburns, numerous moles, and a personal or family history of skin cancer. But remember, that anyone can get a skin cancer. You should watch your moles and check your skin once per month. Look for the ABCDE’s of melanoma… asymmetry, irregular borders, variations in color, diameter bigger than a pencil eraser, and evolution (a new or changing mole). ...And please do not go to the tanning salon.
Q. Is it possible to develop skin cancer if your skin does not burn?
A. Yes. Chronic low grade sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. It is for this reason that I recommend that patients use sunscreen every day. Use a SPF 30 or higher with a good UVA and UVB protection. I like sunscreens with zinc or titanium.
Q. Does a tan provide protection against developing skin cancer?
A. That is kind of backwards thinking. The same rays that are involved in getting a tan are the same rays that cause skin cancer. We do not recommend getting a tan. If you want to look tan, use a sunless tanner.
Q. Is it possible to safely obtain a tan from exposure to ultraviolet radiation?
A. There is no such thing as a safe tan (well- except for the sunless tanner).
Q. How can we contact Dr. Gigler if we have further questions?
A. For readers, please call my office to schedule an appointment if you have any concerns, or call your local dermatologist.
