An Interview with Dr. Ivan Valcarenghi on Dental Implants
Dr. Ivan Valcarenghi is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are the state-of-the-art accepted option to replace missing teeth, or confidently retain dentures.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. They are nearly permanent and there’s nothing else I know of that lasts as long, so they represent an excellent value for tooth replacement. They also provide denture patients with the confidence to laugh and smile without the fear of teeth falling out. This confidence is priceless.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. As stated above, they are about the most permanent treatment we know of. So far, we have never had to replace implants, but implants are only half the treatment for tooth replacement. The other half is the restoration, which in my opinion, is the more complicated part of the process and requires more training for the general dentist to design and restore a case properly.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. Implants are mostly titanium, the same material used in hip and knee replacement.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. Most patients. Today, we can place dental implants in nearly all patients desiring them.
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. With few exceptions, easily, quickly, safely. It is considered, for most cases, a minor surgical procedure with little discomfort or post surgical care.
Q. How long does it take?
A. Each patient is as unique as each implant we place, but roughly 30 minutes per implant.
