Q. What is a facelift?
A. It generally addresses the lower face and neck area. It redrapes the excess sagging skin and tightens the fascia under the skin overlying the muscle.
Q. What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?
A. If done correctly and judiciously, it will turn back the clock about 10 years or more. It will make you look refreshed and younger, not pulled and overdone.
Q. Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?
A. All surgeries carry risks but a facelift is very safe. The major risk is bleeding which unrecognized can lead to a hematoma formation. This is less that 0.5%. Other more common risks are scarring, minor hair loss, infection and anesthetic complications.
Q. Can I expect permanent results from a facelift?
A. No procedure stops the aging process. It will bring you back 10 years or more, but you continue to age just like everyone else.
Q. Is there a common technique for facelift procedures?
A. Most surgeons employ the SMAS technique which address the fascia under the skin and tightens it to a higher position.
Q. Is a facelift performed under general anesthesia?
A. I perform 80% of mine under local anesthesia. It can also be done under general anesthesia and also with IV sedation.
Q. How do I find a qualified surgeon in my area?
A. First, find someone that is specifically trained in this field and is boarded. You should avoid surgeons who have not done a training program specifically in this field and who just "dabble" in this. Take the time to seek out a boarded, well reputed surgeon with whom you feel comfortable. After all, this is your face!
