Insurance agents are the professionals from whom you get car insurance, life insurance, auto insurance and so on. The insurance industry is regulated by the Government, which means that every state has its own set of rules regarding different areas of the insurance industry.
Some of the common features of the industry regulations involve the insurance agents having to be registered with the state's insurance commission. To get registered, the insurance agent has to get through particular conditions like passing the state-conducted exams and participating in educational seminars.
Insurance agents are instructed by the state as well as the insurance company to operate in the interests of the client, but this is not always the case. They generally get hypnotized by the commissions that they get from selling an insurance policy to you. A problem comes about when the agent tries to sell you a product which you do not need, but one which fetches the insurance agent a very good commission.
The client (i.e. you) have every right to query the insurance agent about how much commission he will get from selling you the policy. If you are not sure about the impact the insurance agent's commission will have on the policy you get, you should ask the agent directly. You'll get to know how honest he/she is when replying to such sensitive questions. If your instincts tell you that the agent isn't honest, get the services of another one.
Just keep in mind that there isn't anything wrong in the insurance agent getting paid for the services he/she provides as long as he/she is paid for doing a service which is useful to you. |
