What is the difference between grants and loans for college?

What is the difference between grants and loans for colleges? It is a question that comes up in the mind of many who are seeking financial assistance for their college education.

Towards the final year of high school, most students who want to pursue on a higher education start applying to colleges as well as start searching for financial assistance which is essential for majority of American students as higher education is so unaffordable and on their own financial strength, it is achievable only for the rich and the privileged.

The Federal government, the State, Universities and Colleges, Private and Public Organizations, Individuals and Trusts all have pooled together to make it possible for every American to pursue their dreams in higher education. Their commitment to the No Child Left Behind Act is commendable. The Federal government has provided an immense amount of the national budget to help defray the cost of education which is mostly granted on need base as this is  the category that needs help.

When applying for financial assistance it is important to know the type of assistance you need to apply for as there are two categories available from all the sources which are grants and loans for colleges.

A grant is money given free as a gift and does not need to be paid back. That is a big consolation to any student taking into consideration the amount that you need for college education which is in the region of about $20,000 per annum for a State University. Paying back a loan gives another financial burden after graduation. This is something you can do without. After graduation and when one is established financially it is only natural to become financially committed on a house and a vehicle for which a monthly financial commitment will have to be made. Added to this if there is a student loan to be paid back, it will only become more burdensome.

However, it is not everyone who will be eligible for grants as it is awarded to the most needy and the needy. There are yet students who though may not fall into either category, will yet not be able to afford a college education and for such students who may receive grants, but may be insufficient to cover all costs, they will be left with no choice but to obtain student loans. Federal government and the State are likely to provide loans without an interest charge but yet to be paid back while other financial institutions will add on an interest. These loans are payable after a specified period after graduation providing sufficient time to find employment. Virtually from day one of your employment, you are liable to start paying the student loans. Taking into consideration the cost of a four year degree, which would be around a $80,000 in a State University, paying this back will take most part of your life.

Therefore, most students seek grants and the loans for colleges which are only a fall back option.
