College education is unimaginable with average costs in a State University exceeding $100,000 with very few Americans being able to afford it. However, in support of the No Child Left Behind Act the federal government as well as the public and private sector are making available College Grants for needy and worthy students but you need to get to them early. Start applying for grants early as most of them are awarded based on the money available and therefore it will be granted on a first come first served basis. Don’t limit the application of grants to a few, but apply to as many as possible because you will need a combination of grants to see you through college.

FAFSA:  One of the most important sources of grants is the Federal government and State who have numerous grants available. Before applying for a college grant, through the Federal Government and the State, make sure you have all the documentation you need to annex to the FAFSA which is the application form for obtaining Federal and State grants.

Research for universities that offer the program you wish to follow and pick out the universities that offer a high percentage of grants to which you will be eligible to apply. State Universities that are located in your state will be the best option as these universities will offer school fees at in-state fees cost to students who are residents of that state. However, this should not limit your search to State Universities as there may be equally good or better private universities who may have more grants and scholarships available for their students.

After identifying some of the Universities and visit as many as possible personally and find out from the Financial Assistance office what grants are available which are specific to their College or University. If the distance does not permit you to visit them, then make a call to the institution concerned and talk to them and find out the information your require. You may be surprised how many options are available.

Filling the Application:  Be careful when you fill your application. Be neat and accurate and do not give information that they have not asked for. Remember Universities and Colleges have to go through piles and piles of applications and they really don’t want to read anything that is not relevant or information that they have not asked for. Write out your application neatly. If possible type it otherwise use block letters to write them in a legible manner. Applications that are not readable are likely to be put aside. When writing an essay make it as personal as possible as the scholarship viewers will like to get to know you. Don’t wait for the last minute to post your application but send it off very much in advance. It is likely that the early applications will have a better chance as the viewers are able to go through the application packet leisurely. Keep to all the deadlines of all the applications. Get someone with good writing skills to check your application and make sure that the application is error free.
