A. Tooth whitening is a process where chemicals are used to change the shade of the tooth.
Q. Who may benefit from teeth whitening?
A. Those candidates that would get the best use from whitening are those with extrinsic stains (stains caused from external products, i.e. drinking and eating habits)
Q. Who are not recommended to undergo teeth whitening?
A. People with intrinsic stains usually have a tougher time getting a good esthetic result. Intrinsic stains are those associated with defects while tooth was forming ( i.e. fluorosis, tetracycline staining)
Q. What does tooth whitening involve?
A. The process involves wearing custom fit trays, to apply the agent to the teeth for a set period of time.
Q. How long does this take?
A. The time varies depending on factors such as original tooth shade, desired tooth shade, eating habits, etc. You will usually see definitive results after two or three applications
Q. How much does tooth whitening cost?
A. It depends on the type but it can range from $60 for prefilled disposable trays to $350 for custom reusable trays.
Q. What are the side effects?
A. The most pressing side effect is tooth sensitivity. The process may cause the teeth to become temperature sensitive.
