An interview with Dr. Gary Schlotterer

Dr.Gary Schlotterer is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.

Q. What are dentures?

A. Dentures are any type of appliance that replaces missing teeth.  Most people think of the word "dentures" to mean false teeth or a removable "plate" but some dentures are fixed or cemented in place and are commonly called bridges.

Q. Why should I use a denture adhesive?

A. Denture adhesives are not always necessary for people who wear removable dentures but when dentures don’t quite fit properly products like Fixodent or PolyGrip can help.

Q. What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?

A. All types of dentures (removable or fixed), when made properly should look very much like natural teeth.

Q. How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?

A. Most dentures are processed in a dental lab and usually take about two weeks to fabricate.

Q. What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?

A. Dental implants are an alternative to dentures.  Implants require surgery to place the implant, take longer to heal, and are more expensive than dentures, however, all of our implant patients have said it was definitely worth it.

Q. Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?

A. Dentures should not be uncomfortable or painful to wear.  If so, the denture is probably ill-fitting and needs to be adjusted, relined, or re-made.

Q. What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?

A. The difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures is that immediate dentures are delivered the same day the teeth are extracted.  The advantage to doing immediate dentures is that the patient doesn’t have to go around without any teeth.  The disadvantage is that immediate dentures don’t fit quite as well and always need to be relined after the extraction sites heal.

Q. How to contact Dr. Schlotterer if we have further questions?
