An Interview with Dr. Christian Balarie on Dentures

Dr. Christian Balarie is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.

Q. What are dentures?

A. Dentures are artificial appliances that replace missing teeth. They could be partial dentures if it only replaces some teeth ( 1,2,3,4).Or full/complete dentures if it replaces the whole dentition either in the upper or the bottom.

Q. Why should I use a denture adhesive?

A. A denture adhesive could be used if the denture does not have enough stability (usually a conventional full lower denture ) at the beginning of the treatment. Nowadays mini-implants supporting a lower denture are a great resource to improve stability.

Q. What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?

A. They are many different types, but basically if they are partial dentures they can be metal free, flexible (valplast etc).  With full dentures we can put porcelain teeth.

Q. How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?

A. Depending on the case, but to give you a general idea it could take 3 to 4 appointments.

Q. What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?

A. Implants would be the best alternative to any denture.

Q. Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?

A. Like any thing new (like a new pair of shoes) it take some time to get used to a  new denture. They are not painful to wear, It just takes a few adjustments to have a comfortable denture.

Q. What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?

A. Immediate dentures are installed the same day that teeth are pulled. Conventional dentures are the ones that are being made step by step after removing teeth that need to be removed and waiting for the bone to heal.
Obviously the outcome can be better predicted with a conventional denture than with a immediate denture.
