Types of Dieting |

When the word "diet" is mentioned people tend to automatically think of weight loss. However, dieting is not always about weight loss. In some cases, people actually diet in order to gain weight! Dieting is simply the term given to the practice of regulating the intake of food.
Beware of following fad diets. Remember, not all diets suit everybody. Your diet has to be determined based on your metabolism, activity level, genetics and overall state of health. We are almost constantly bombarded with information that supports the benefits of a healthy diet. There are over 100 diets listed on Wikipedia alone. This kind of information overload also means that you're also more likely to make the wrong choice. A qualified dietician or nutritionist will be able to come up with a diet plan that will suit your needs.
Medicinecabinet.com lists seven most common nutrition mistakes that people make. (The information they published was based on information obtained from the American Dietetic Association.)
Assuming dietary choices are better than they actually are
Being confused about carbs
Eating too much
Not eating enough- or not often enough
Taking too many supplements
Excluding exercise
Believing everything they read about nutrition and weight loss
Most people follow diets in order to maintain a healthy weight. This is done by limiting calorific intake and reducing fatty foods. The average calorific allowance for a normal healthy adult is about 2000 calories.
Athletes who take part in professional sports will be interested in a diet that will provide enough energy for sports and help build muscle mass. Carbohydrates and fats provide most of the energy that athletes need in order to perform well. Athletes are also advised to eat more proteins that will help build muscle.
People suffering from malnutrition and the effects of starvation have to follow a diet that will enable them to replace lost nutrients so that they can regain their strength.
Pregnant and lactating women have to follow a nutritious diet with the healthy development of the baby in mind.
?People who suffer from certain diseases are asked to follow diets that will either reduce, or control the negative effects that the diseases have on their bodies. For instance, people suffering from diabetes are most often asked to follow a diet high in dietary fiber and low in fat.
Some people also follow diets for religious reasons. Most Hindu-Indians and almost all Buddhists, follow a vegetarian diet for this reason.
People also diet for the purpose of maintaining good health (health-food diets). Detoxifying-diets and anti-aging diets come under this category. A healthy diet provides all the nutrients necessary for the development and maintenance of your body and helps you stay in good shape. It has also been proven to slow down aging and promote longevity.
Whatever the reasons may be for your diet, it's always wiser to consult a dietician before you decide on your diet plan.
