Why are we talking about stress management under the topic of dieting you may ask? It's because there is a definite link between the two. If you are not eating right, it can lead to stress. On the flipside, if you are stressed, it will affect your nutrition uptake and you probably won't be healthy even if your eating plan is admirable. In short, healthy eating plays a big role in helping you to avoid or cope with stress.

What are the food groups that contribute to physical and mental energy and emotional well-being? Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals all pitch in. If you are under stress, your body will not absorb some nutrients effectively or it will demand a bigger supply of certain nutrients. Stress can affect the functionality of your immune system, which is why people who are stressed out tend to suffer from minor ailments, like headaches or colds. Never let periods of stress lead you to rely on fast food or unhealthy snacks. It only makes things worse.

So what are the types of food you should eat to manage stress? Whole grains and fiber- this should be the golden rule. The latter can be found in fruits and vegetables. Whole grain means oats, wheat and types of nuts. Some cereals claim to contain whole grain too. Basically magnesium, vitamins C and B will help you to cope with stress without having a health breakdown. Most nutritionists recommend that anyone under stress take a multivitamin but remember that this is more of a precautionary measure, not the solution to your troubles. It's best to take nutrients in the natural way- through food- than any pill. Vitamins taken in pill form cannot replace healthy eating habits because of absorption issues. Food also contains other elements (certain chemicals) that support the functioning of the immune system.

When talking about stress, we can't overlook the effect of caffeine and sugar. You and I know how easy it is to gulp down coffee or munch chocolates or other sweets when we are down in the dumps. These foods give us a temporary boost of energy and a feeling of wellbeing. But in the long run, they are detrimental to health. Coffee and high sugar food keeps us up in the night when the body is screaming for rest. So rather than help the situation they are actually increasing your stress levels.
