1. Apple
Though the saying 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away' may not be entirely true, apples are quite nutritious, convenient and available in abundance. Apples get top grades for containing a lot of fibre, more particularly, pectin which helps to down your cholesterol. I'd recommend you eat a whole apple rather than drinking apple juice since the fiber, vitamins and minerals may not be there when the juice is processed.
2. Apricot
Though the amount of calories in an apricot is just 1/5th of what you get in an apple, apricots contain a lot of protein, calcium, zinc and folic acid. Apricots also have a high content of beta - carotene, a very useful antioxidant, as well as fibre and potassium
3. Avocado
Avocados are often mistaken as a veggie, but they are actually a fruit, and a fruit with the most nutrition possible. Avocados are high in protein, folic acid, niacin, zinc and thiamin. Avocados have a lot of calories, which weight - conscious people might be wary of, but which is good for growing children. The amount of fat in avocados really depends on where you get them from.
4. Banana
Bananas are an all - time favourite fruit among a lot of people because they're so tasty and can be blended into a nice smoothie. People also like bananas because they can be mashed quickly for baby food. Bananas have a high content of potassium, so it would be a good idea for people on certain medications to consume bananas, such as diuretics (which reduce the amount of potassium in the body). You really don't have to worry about the risk of pesticides, as the 'easy - to - peel' feature of bananas ensure that you can just peel off the pesticides too!
5. Blueberries
A common perception about blueberries is that they don't come with a lot of nutrition, which recent studies have proved false. Blueberries have an antioxidant in their skin, a cancer - fighting phyto called anthocyanin. Blueberries are an excellent choice if you're in the mood for a smoothie. The great taste and awesome purple colour really makes you want to devour the smoothie as quick as possible!
6. Grapefruit
Grapefruit contains less calories and high fibre and vitamin C. Grapefruits also have a lot of beta - carotene. Half the fiber is of the insoluble variety (good news for intestines) and the other half if the soluble pectin (good news for you heart). However, don't forget that most of the fiber is in the stringy walls that separate segments of the grapefruit. Therefore, try avoiding separating segments with a spoon or else you might not get most of the fiber!
7. Guavas
Guavas are becoming quite difficult to get, but make sure you devour them when you get a chance. They get into the top rankings for high fiber and vitamin E content. Guava juice, as you may have noticed, is available in nearly all supermarkets, but the fact that they mix corn syrup means that the nutritional value is reduced. |
