Good eating habits will avert ill health in later years. This should be inculcated to your children from the time they are toddlers so that their palette gets used to that type of food. Explaining to them when they are able to understand, the importance of healthy food habits and the consequences in getting used to unhealthy food habits will linger in their minds forever.
Spending a little time to make a good balanced family meal is very important and should not be taken lightly. Your children are your greatest treasure and for their benefits and that of yourself avoid easy fast food culture. Our ancestors had less health issues than what is faced in the present world because there was no fast food outlets around, and parents felt it was a pleasure to cook and feed their young ones. Most of health issues are caused by poor eating habits. Of course, fast food culture is very convenient and in countries like USA it is not even expensive or for that matter, is cheaper. It is therefore tempting to buy some burghers and make it a meal rather than spend time cooking a nutritious meal accompanied with vegetables. That is the easy way out but it is also the quickest way for all kinds of health related problems.
Make family meal a pleasure. It is a time to catch up with the days activities of the children and time to bond together. It also gives you an opportunity to introduce new kinds of food and to be a role model by eating health food yourself.
Include fruits and vegetables in every meal. Instead of serving unhealthy snacks, get used to the habit of eating vegetables sticks with a dipping as a snack and plenty of fresh fruits as possible. Low fat yoghurts are nutritious as well and children would love this. Peanut butter and celery or whole grain crackers and cheese are good snacks for children but for adults you can substitute the cheese with low fat.
Fish, lean meats, beans and nuts should be included in your meal. While whole eggs are good for children as you advance in years, it is best to avoid yellow yolks. If you have cholesterol, then you need to avoid egg yellow completely.
Children and adults both need fiber. Choose whole grain breads and cereals. Food alone is not the healthy form of eating but ways of cooking are equally important therefore limit fat intake as much as possible. Resort to healthier cooking such as broiling, grilling, roasting and steaming. Use fat that has low levels of cholesterol even when using a minute quantity of oil.
Do away with pop and sugary drinks and take fresh juice instead. Low fat milk and water are also important to your health. Avoid full cream dairy products.
Eating healthy will help you to stay healthy for the rest of your life.
