Dieting as a Practice: Dieting Ideas |
|
Dieting is the practice of regulating food-intake. It is also an age old practice that has been around for centuries. There are records of diets prescribed by doctors in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today there are over 100 diet plans listed on Wikipedia alone. Dieting may be practiced for a number of reasons. Most people diet in order to improve or maintain their health and to stay in shape.
A healthy diet consists mainly of fruits, vegetables, grains, milk and dairy and lean meat-all in the correct proportions. Such a diet will ensure that you get all the nutrients you need for the development and maintenance of a healthy body. Not only does a healthy diet help you stay in shape, it also provides you with protection from several diseases; like cardiovascular disease and several types of cancer. It improves the condition of your skin and helps regulate your blood pressure. A healthy diet has also been proven to help slow down the effects of aging and promote longevity.
It's important to remember that when it comes to maintaining your health, consistency is important. It's easy to get excited about a health plan- only to abandon it after a few weeks. This is why it's important to come up with a diet plan that is not only healthy but easy to follow as well. It's important to practice following a healthy diet so that it becomes a very natural part of your daily life.
In the information overloaded world of today it's easy to be misled. Remember, not all diets suit everybody. Your diet has to be designed based on your metabolic rate, activity level, environment, genetic make-up and overall state of health. Therefore, it would be wise to consult a qualified dietician before you decide on a diet-plan. Such a dietician will be able to come up with a versatile, easy-to-follow plan that will suit your individual needs. An easy-to-follow diet means that you are more likely to stick to it for-life. You cannot use the- "no time" excuse, that most people use, no matter how busy you are. For those who like using this excuse, I would like to quote Edward Stanley who says;
"Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness."
This quote can be applied to the practice of following a healthy diet as well.
Make gradual changes in your diet, to ensure that you're not overwhelmed by the changes. Take small, step-by-step measures that will eventually make healthy eating a daily practice. For instance, each time you feel a craving for snacks, snack on fruits and nuts instead of on salty crisps and junk food. Fruits can also help satisfy a sweet tooth.
Motivate yourself. Read articles that outline the benefits of a healthy diet. This will make you look at dieting as less of a chore. Remember;
"The greatest wealth is health."
