About What Is Dementia: What Is Dementia?

What is dementia and how can it be treated? Dealing with this illness can also lead to depression. Depression not only affects the person who is going through it, but also everyone around them, including friends, family, loved ones, spouses, and children.

What is Dementia
Dementia is a sickness' where a person suffers loss of memory and inability to learn and communicate. Unless properly treated' this can lead to change of personality and mood' and after a period of time' they will suffer silently due to the fact that they are unable to handle things on their own' and also due to loss of memory. With time' this will come to stay' and the person suffering from dementia will totally be oblivious of the sickness that they suffer.

Dementia can occur due to destruction of cells in the brain. And the cause of dead brain cells will be due to head injury' stroke' brain tumor and Alzheimer’s disease. Also vascular disease' where brain cells carrying oxygen to the brain disrupting' and without the required oxygen for the brain cells to function' these cells can die' and result in dementia. When the symptoms are not prominent enough to diagnose as Alzheimer’s disease' or other type of dementia' this condition is referred to as ‘mild cognitive impairment’ (MCI). The probability of patients suffering from MCI ending up with Dementia is less than 15%. What are the signs and symptoms of dementia?

Loss of memory – People suffering from dementia will not be able to recall and remember what they have said. Also some may even repeat when they are in need or want' but may not be aware of the fact that they are doing so. Difficulty in handling day to day tasks -They will not be able to fall into a routine of work due to the fact that they are unable to continue work or start work. This will lead to work left undone and unattended to.

Communication – May tend to forget words and as a result and will use words that are not necessary' thereby causing confusion amongst those who are present. This will also leave the person suffering from dementia' helpless and hopeless.

Disorientation – Dementia sufferers will have major issues if left alone out of home. As dementia causes loss of memory' they are at cross roads' when out of home' as they find it difficult to get the point of origin.

Changes in moods and personality -There will be major mood swings' where they would be laughing at one moment and the next crying.

Unable to handle situations –They become more passive and submissive.

It is therefore very important that dementia is identified and properly treated promptly' in order to prevent other diseases such as Alzheimer’s and depression. Leading a healthy life and regular exercise are vital and keeping your mind active in adult life' will reduce the risk of dementia.
