Alzheimer’s disease is known to be the most common cause of Dementia. This disease was first explained by the renowned German neurologist as a disease affecting the brain. When suffering from Alzheimer' ‘plaques’ and ‘tangles’ develop in the brain and this results in brain cell damage and deaths. Alzheimer’s is a disease where people suffer with memory loss' and where behavior and thinking suffer due to damage in brain cells. Alzheimer’s gets worse with time and is considered fatal and it is known to be the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
The greatest risk factor for Alzheimer is increase in age. It is known that people over the age of 65 are more at risk of getting Alzheimer' and at the age of 85' you increase the risk factor by 50%. Family history of Alzheimer will increase the risk of this disease. According to scientists' the genes in your body can determine whether there is a possibility of developing this disease. Though these genes tend to increase the risk of getting Alzheimer' it is not a guarantee of a person getting Alzheimer at some stage in their lives due to this. Other than the known risk factor for Alzheimer such as age' heredity and genes' research has found new evidence which can cause Alzheimer. Head injury is one of the causes that can cause Alzheimer' and the other risk factors being' cardio-vascular disease' high cholesterol' diabetes and stroke that damage the heart or blood vessels.
According to Alzheimer’s Association' the following signs will help detect if memory loss is a serious issue or not and thereby being able to diagnose whether the person is suffering from Alzheimer. They are:
• Loss of Memory • Being unable to handle the day to day tasks • Communication – language problem • Disorientation – being unable to locate place and not being aware of time • Poor Judgment • Problem in thinking • Unable to locate things • Mood swings for no apparent reason • Change of personality • Lack of initiative
It is best that the doctor is consulted no sooner you notice the above symptoms' as early diagnosis has many advantages such as' maximizing the quality of life' undue stress and worry and benefiting and getting the maximum from medication and treatment. Although medication will help Alzheimer’s behavioral changes it is important that they be given proper nutrition' physical exercise and involving and engaging them in social activities' in order to give them a comfortable and satisfying life. |
