Diagnostics and medical treatment
Major Depression is characterized by various signs and symptoms such as low-sad feeling' irritable nature' guilt' loss of interest in things that they enjoyed doing before' insomnia' hopeless and helpless feeling' loss of self-worth' inability to make decisions and feeling of guilt to name a few. Major depression is periodic and can occur once or several times' and the chances of a person getting the depressive disorder (another name for major depression) the second time is 50%.

Many times depression is left undiagnosed due to the fact they attribute the poor performance and depressing state to other situations or medical conditions that they may go through or thinking that it is a certain phase in his life' and as a result they suffer much. As such it is best that people know what major depression is and if one notices any of the symptoms mentioned above that proper medication be given' as failure to do this can be detrimental. People suffering from major depression' sometimes not being able to cope up with the situation that they are going through' even think of ending their lives by committing suicide.

People if in doubt of this medical condition' can on their own take a depression self-test' which will give them a rough idea as to whether they need immediate professional medical assistance or not. This is not the ideal criteria for evaluation for this disorder' as a professional medical practitioner will be able to correctly diagnose through discussions' physical examinations' laboratory tests and screening tools whether the person is suffering from major depression or whether the symptoms are due to other medical conditions or personal situations. The physician will then get a full history of when the symptoms were first noticed' and the period of time they lasted' severity of same' and also will want to know whether this is the first instance this has occurred' or if there have been instances before and the kind of treatment he has had. Finding out whether there is family history of depression will also be important for the physician' when determining the cause of depression.

Antidepressant medications and psychotherapy will bring out the best results when treating major depression. The course of treatment and the period will vary from person to person' and the physician will decide the best method of treatment depending on the symptoms and its severity. When choosing antidepressants' the physician will take into consideration the person’s age' the depressive state the person is in and other medical conditions. The initial form of treatment is giving the patient antidepressants such as selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors' as this works by selectively blocking the serotonin uptake in the brain. The SSRIs are initially used due to the lower severity of side affects' when compared to other forms of antidepressant drugs. Antidepressants with serotonin and norepinephrine such as' duloxetine' venlafaxine and mirtazapine are used in severe cases of major depression.

Though this is considered a critical condition' major depression is treatable' and there are many who have recovered and are leading a healthy and normal life.
