About Suffering From Depression: Suffering From Depression

Suffering from depression is a painful process. Depression not only affects the person who is going through it, but also everyone around them, including friends, family, loved ones, spouses, and children.

Death and depression
Depression is an illness where the way people think' act and feel suffer. According to research every one in five persons suffer from depression. Identifying depression is not an easy task in older adults. People suffer depression for many reasons such as loss of a loved one or death' retirement' unemployment' stress and illnesses. Much is not spoken about depression due to the stigma attached to it' and also for not being aware of it. Many people suffering depression are not treated for lack of knowledge and not being aware of the fact that he/she is suffering from depression. People suffering from depression' have negative opinions of themselves' lose confidence and have low self-worth. Feeling of inadequacy and incapability envelopes them' and they suffer silently.

One of the main causes of depression in adults is the loss of a family member or a loved one' and mainly the cause being the death of a spouse or the immediate dependant. People who have been living together for many years find the loss of his/her partner unable to bear and are left with a sense of helplessness and hopelessness. This is where they start loosing identity and feel they are being a burden to another. Though this may not be a matter that is discussed openly' it is found according to research' that many suffer depression in adult life due to loneliness.

Death of your loved one leaves you to handle things that you once did together' alone. And' if the person you loose was the provider' this will make you get into financial difficulties' and you suffer more. This gets you into a situation where you have to depend on others for your day to day expenses' meals' accommodation and clothing. The once dependant person all at once finds him/herself in a totally dependant situation. With time' this affects you so badly' that you feel you are being a burden to others. The more you think on these lines' the more depressed you become. And without the knowledge of others' or the person himself' depression sets in' and takes root in his life. Sadly' people may not recognize this situation' as they will associate the mood change' and the negative feelings' as a phase in their life' and associate it mainly' as a result of the death of the loved one. This is the dangerous element in this sickness. It is very rarely that depression is diagnosed' as doctors and people around them' feel that the situation they are in is relation to what they are going through. As such depression is not identified' and when identified it is not treated.

Therefore' it is important that those around these people help those who are in need of help' and avoid a situation that will lead to depression. Do not ignore' if you see something that is unusual in behavior patterns' thinking or acting. Avoid a situation' and avoid depression in others. After all you owe it to those who have helped you in some stage of your lives.
