| When to seek medical help |
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a common syndrome that is seen mostly in the northern temperate parts of the world. With the setting in of cold weather' less sunlight and the dull atmosphere' people tend to have mood swings that causes them to become more lazy and sleepy and eat excessively. People lose interest in day to day activities' the shorter days forcing them to stay indoors. Those suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder tend to gain weight due to over-eating and their craving for sugary and starch foods.
Just as any other disease' Seasonal Affective Disorder should also be treated. Although it may not be severe' it should not be neglected and proper medication must be taken to prevent further complications of the syndrome. Early treatment' if not prevention is the best way to go. One should not wait for half the winter to go by before seeking help. There are many treatments or Seasonal Affective Disorder; one of the most important being Light Therapy.
Bright light therapy is actually the main treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder. A person needs a balanced and regular amount of light per day to stay healthy; the bright light therapy helps people who cannot get this light naturally by sunlight by giving them artificial light. For an example' with 10000-lux light' a person only needs 30 minutes of exposure to get a curing effect towards Seasonal Affective Disorder. This therapy could have some drawbacks. The symptoms may come back in about one week when the treatments are discontinued. Therefore' treatments should be continuously taken to prevent recurrence of SAD.
Negative Ion Therapy is another treatment method for Seasonal Affective Disorder. There are ionizers for cleaning the air. This works by sending out negative ions to the surrounding which then cling on to the positively charged dirt molecules. They settle down making the air much cleaner. Negative ions are formed from natural sources such as sunlight' wind and moving water. These sources may not be readily available to a SAD sufferer. Although this is not proven as a permanent cure' it certainly helps a person to get much relief.
We must realize that SAD is a seasonal disease and that it is curable. The treatment is based on getting enough light and staying active during the winter days. With the beginning of spring' with the grey skies disappearing' sunlight falling in plenty and weather becoming warm' the SAD symptoms will gradually fade away. With the surroundings becoming more pleasant' the day to day activities of a person will get back to a normal routine.
Summary – The timing of treatment is always important when countering any disease. As with any illness' SAD is best treated at the initial stages' when the symptoms are mild. |
