| The risk of suicide |
Depression is a very serious issue. It can cause an individual to totally crumble and fall on his/her knees. As such it is very important for the people around the individual to realize and identify when a loved one needs help. But unlike other sicknesses depression might be hard to spot until it is too late.
There are many things that might cause depression in young adolescents. Some of the causes are peer and social pressures' pressure from parents' social relationships' parents leaving or separating' loss of a loved one' failure in school activities' not being able to keep up with others' being a social outcast and so on. In today’s world parents have to work really heard and most of the time they are very busy. It does not mean that a parent is neglective' but rather when a parent does not pay close attention to the child then the parent might miss the fact that their child is suffering with depression. Say for an example the parents get separated' this on its own might cause many children to fall victim to depression' but if the single parent starts to see someone else then the child might not understand or it might be too soon for the child to cope up to such a big change. Another issue could be that the child might not want to talk to parents. Some times children do think that they are enough of a burden to their parents and that they should solve their own problems. This could also lead to the same end result.
When they feel that they might be failing at what they do' this might lead to thoughts of suicide. The fact that they speak of it does not mean that they will directly say that they have reason to commit suicide. To understand when a child says it' the parents or guardians need to be able to listen and understand. Most of the time in suicide cases' parents and guardians say later “to think of it I should have seen it coming.” This being said after it is already over is of little use. It is up to the parents or the guardian to identify these symptoms immediately and administer proper medical help.
As parents it is your duty to try and understand your child as much as possible. Knowing when your child needs help and helping them when they need is not just a duty' it is a thing that parents should do with all their heart. A child can be saved easily provided that proper attention and care is given to him/her. All they are asking for is a bit of love and care. |
