Everyone has their ups and downs in life; these may be caused due to various reasons such as deaths of loved ones' loss of jobs and many other unexpected tragedies. These kinds of incidents bring a deep sorrow to one that is unexplainable. How one handles this sorrow varies from one person to another. It is very natural to have long lasting sadness in such situations but too long and unattended sadness could lead to various illnesses. This is known as Depression.
Depression is a serious medical illness that negatively affects how one feels' the way one thinks and acts. Depression could be caused by many factors' environmental factors' and hormonal imbalances' chemical changes in the brain' social factors or a traumatic event such as the death of a loved one or a job loss. Depression can also be triggered by alcohol consumption and drug abuse. Depression should be treated seriously just as any other illness as this could lead to severe mental and physical problems' even suicide.
There are many ways that one can overcome depression' when one is in a depression; it is a very difficult task to come out of it by one’s will power as it will only worsen the situation. It is best to seek medical help; friends and family must encourage a person suffering from depression to immediately find the suitable medical relief.
Treatment of Depression has various approaches and it could take from 3 months to even life long attention depending on the person and the severity of the condition. The affected can join support groups where they can talk and meet new people with similar problems' this will greatly help the person to let out the sadness inside and also it will make one feel that he is not the only one with such a problem. This will greatly improve one’s mood' coping skills and enhance quality of life.
Psychotherapy' also known as the “talk” therapy' helps one to talk to a professional about their depression and issues that are troubling them and causing the depression. This helps one greatly as depression is mainly caused due to restraining the sorrow and sadness inside.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps patients change negative ways of thinking and behavior associated with their depression. When one learns to think positively' he will be happier and enthusiastic towards life helping them overcome the depression.
Interpersonal therapy (IPT) focuses on the person’s relationships and situations that could be causing the depression.
Antidepressant medications- many medications are available that can provide relief. More than one medication at a time may be prescribed' and it may take six to eight weeks for them to be fully effective.
Whatever the medication used' there should be a great contribution from the affected to get over the depression. Then only the medications and treatments will be effective. Getting over a depression is not easy' only the affected will know how painful it is' but it is the duty of the person’s family and friends to help him find professional help. This way' one can again live a happier and healthier life
