About How To Get Over: How To Get Over The Homesickness

What is homesickness? It is missing home. It is normal and almost everyone goes through homesickness at some stage of their life time. It is reported that 95% of all campers go through minor homesickness' 20% have moderate homesickness and 7% are severe. Physical symptoms are cramps' diarrhea' ulcers' headaches' tense muscles' vomiting' crying and withdrawal.
College freshman studying abroad or going to college in your home state' are great victims of homesickness. They have to go through a period of adjustment when they leave home. Leaving home' the loved ones and familiar surrounding is stressful to say the least and experiencing new things and meeting new people make it much worse. Separation from loved ones and a specific home environment are often followed by anxiety and depression. Some students settle in quickly especially if they have already had short term separations in preparation but for others it takes longer. Homesickness is a yearning to be with their family and missing the home routine. Some students settle in without any problems but might experience homesickness middle of the academic year especially during special events of the family or during Thanksgiving' Easter or Christmas knowing that this special day is the beginning of many other special days that they will miss. Birthdays of family members will be no better.
The good news about homesickness is that it eventually goes away. With passage of time you get used to your new environment. So accept that it is normal to go through this emotion and that things will be different and that it does not mean that it is going to be bad. It is important to be positive and flexible to suit the new situation.
Bring personal items such as photographs' posters' stuffed animal' music and specialty food items from your country.
Think of what lies ahead and what you will be able to achieve at the end of the period' rather than thinking what you are missing. Think of all the opportunities and experiences that are in store for you and how blessed you are to have this experience.
Remember that you are not the only one who is going through this emotion. Find a friend with whom you can share your emotions. Learn about your new surroundings and as you settle down and feel at home in the new place' homesickness will fade away.
Keep in touch with your family and friends. You are only a call or click away from family and friends.
Stick to a routine. Join a club or study group. Find a part time job that will get you involved with other people.
Plan to visit or invite friends and family. Find things of interest to keep yourself occupied.
Don’t allow negative thoughts to take control of your mind and instead be focused on the goals you have for life and how best you can achieve them |
