Dysthymia is a chronic mild form of depression that leaves a person in a low spirit or sad mood. The symptoms of dysthymia is a low-sad feeling through out the period' and they struggle with a low self-esteem' hopeless and helpless feeling' loss of appetite or overeating' tiredness' insomnia and lack of concentration.

The medication and drugs for dysthymia are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors' Tricyclic Antidepressants and talk' behavioral and inter personal therapy. According to research a combination of medicine and psychotherapy has worked well with cases of dysthymia. It has been found that certain antidepressant drugs such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors tend to cause complications' and many have found that they suffer stomach disorders and mild insomnia due to this. This can further aggravate the condition of dysthymia that they are going through' as lack of sleep can further affect their ability to carry out their day to day work' and also lead to further difficulty in concentration. This is a serious condition as a symptom of dysthymia is lack of concentration' and if these patients tend to suffer more due to drugs taken for dysthymia' it may leave them in a quite a helpless situation.

Criteria for diagnosing dysthymia are also one of the complications. Dysthymia sufferers as well as people associating with the patients are unable to say from the symptoms that these patients are definitely suffering from this disease. Therefore very often they do not seek medical attention. Also as this condition has to be prevalent for a number of years to be diagnosed as dysthymia' not only does the patient suffer' it can lead to other possible medical complications such as major depression in a person’s life.
