Dysthymia is a chronic mild depression that persists for a number of years. 5% of the population suffers from this disorder' and many have not been diagnosed due to the fact that this being a mild form of depression the sufferers were not aware of the fact that they are suffering from dysthymia. Dysthymia can occur due to various reasons' though the exact cause is not known; hereditary' environment or episodes or phases faced by the individual have contributed towards dysthymia. According to experts' it is found that Dysthymia is related to changes that occur in the brain that involves serotonin' which is a neurotransmitter that helps the brain to handle emotions. Another contributing factor has been long term illnesses and medications that have had effects on their personality and behavior. Sadly' this condition is not diagnosed due to the fact' many do not take notice of the symptoms to the sickness that they are suffering' and as such it is left alone.
People suffering from dysthymia are more often than not are in a low or sad mood. This condition prevails for a long period of time' and it is known to be the criteria for diagnosing dysthmia in people. It has been quite a difficult task to identify dysthymia in adults as they are suffering from many sicknesses such as cardio-vascular disease' diabetes' stroke' cancer and high blood pressure' and the symptoms of dysthymia are misunderstood as signs of existing ailment. Also' many tend to take no notice of this condition as they associate the personality and behavioral changes to old age. Adults suffering from dysthymia tend to loose interest in the activities they used to enjoy before and will have sad or low mood' and will want to be left alone. A professional or a physician will be able to identify the sicknesses in a person' by speaking to them. The personality changes are quite evident' as they will continuously have a hopeless and helpless attitude and will not want to get involved in activities they enjoyed doing before.
Adults suffering from dysthymia' will also complain of physical aches and pains for no reason at all' and this is due to the condition that they are going through' and as such people around are expected to identify these symptoms' and proper medication be given to minimize the condition they are going through.
Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness are a common symptom that adults suffer' and their personality and behavior changes to a very low negative and lonely feeling. These leads them to have a negative view of themselves' and low-self esteem and confidence suffers as a process and they constantly have a question in their mind' as to what’s the purpose of life and living? This is a serious situation' and if treatment is not given promptly this can lead to even loss of life.
Therefore' it is important that people are more observant' if and when they notice behavioral and personality changes in adults which are not associated to old age. The family and loved ones around should make it their responsibility to see that these seniors do not go through any suffering that can be avoided. After all you owe it to them for all they have done for you. |
