Many people suffer from major depression at some point in their lives. Major depression is a critical condition' and people suffering from this disease are in a low-sad mood and are unable to overcome the situation they are in. When they are in this depressed state they constantly have feelings of hopelessness and helplessness' unable to take any positive measures and make simple decisions in life. They have a feelings of guilt and loss of confidence and self-esteem and do not even enjoy taking part in any activity they enjoyed doing before.
Major depression can be caused by several factors including social and psychological issues. Let us look at the social causes that can raise the risk of depression in a person. Stress has been a major contributor as a risk factor in major depression. Once it triggers off in the first instance' the second and third episodes will automatically cause depression in people' when they encounter stressful events or work. According to scientists this phenomenon is known as ‘kindling sensitization hypothesis.’ As per this hypothesis' the initial episode of depression creates changes in the brain chemistry' where it leaves room for more possible attacks' when encountering stress in life. As initial episodes of depression can raise the risk of other episodes to follow' sometimes people with this disorder get into depressive moods even when they are confronted with small issues. The effects of stresses in life will vary from person to person' and it can even take away the control they have of themselves' and thereby causing great emotional pain and trauma. When referring to stress factors' it is not only issues that are pertaining to their daily activities that will get them into a depressive state' but also joyous occasions such as their weddings or personal achievements in life can cause depression. Some of the common social causes that can trigger depression are:
• Death of a loved one or a family member • Financial difficulty • Relationships in life • Separation from your partner or spouse or Divorce • Abusive relationships • Childhood trauma • Abuse during childhood • Rape • Victimization • False accusation • Neglect during childhood • Violence in family • Chaotic and stressful home life' where parents are alcoholics • Disharmony at home • Constant broken relationships • Series of traumatic episodes in life • Social isolation • Addiction to alcohol and drugs and also moving away or discontinuing of same
If one of the causes for major depression is social issues' it is heartening to note that it can also prevent it from occurring. “Social support’ is known to be one of the well-studied and result oriented sociological factors that prevent depression. Social support or a social supporting network will immensely help those' in need. Love' care' guidance' advice and support will gradually get them out of these situations. According to research' people who have this type of link or a relationship with someone are able to communicate and bring out their concerns. This supportive system will help them out as talking is known to be an effective therapy' and such people who communicate are less stressed out than those who do not have this kind of support.
