| Causes and effects of major depression |
Major Depression is known to be one of the serious mood disorders' and the other being bipolar disorder or manic depressive disorder. Major depression is also known as Major depressive disorder and Unipolar disorder. Since there is no elevated mood in this disorder it is called unipolar depression. People suffering from major depression' will have a low and sad feeling' and will not be able to cope up with same. They loose interest in activaties they enjoyed doing before' and quite often want to be left alone' and have a negative and low self-esteem. Though they are able to handle their day to day work' they find it difficult to make decisions in life' and feel they are unable to take responsibility. If prompt treatment is not given' these people silently suffer' and even think of suicide to escape from this tormenting disorder.
Cases of major depression has risen in the 20th century' and though there are many reasons for this condition' socioeconomic changes due to World War II “baby boomer” generation' is considered as a cause according to study.
In the United States one in six people suffer from major depressive disorder during their life time. The exact number or percentage of sufferers are not known due to the fact' that only 50% seek treatment for this condition. This is mainly due to the fact the person suffering from depression being not aware and also people around associating the symptoms to norms in life or a situation that they may be going through. Reported major depressive cases vary from country to country and the lowest being 2%' this figure has been reported by Asian and Southeast Asian countries.
The causes for major depression are family history' combination of brain chemistry and psychosocial environment. Though it cannot be categorically said that one factor is more dominant than the rest' it is known that abnormal levels of neurotransmitters' serotonin' norepinephrine and dopamine are closely associated with depression. Neurotransmitters are closely associated with moods and joys in the brain' thus depression is generally attributed to chemical imbalances.
According to statistics' children of parents who have suffered depression are at risk of this disorder' and have 27% chance of developing major depression at some stage in their lives' and those where both parents have undergone an episode of depression' double the risk of getting this disorder. Major depression is common in people who have had traumatic experiences' physical and sexual abuse' ill health' loss of a loved one' alcohol and drugs to name a few. Although depression can occur at any stage in life' more women are known to suffer from depression than men.
Though major depression is known to be a critical disorder' when analyzing the causes for depression it has been found that there are many factors causing depression which can be avoided. Be aware of the symptoms' and if and when you notice any abnormality in a person' it is best that he is taken for proper diagnosis and medical attention. |
