| The prognosis |
Bipolar disorders range from mild to severe but the good news is that they can all be managed and controlled with early detection and proper treatment.
There are no laboratory tests that can prove and confirm that anyone is going through bipolar disorder and can be judged only through observation of symptoms and duration of symptoms. Therefore diagnosis takes much longer than in other sicknesses where diagnosis is so much easier due to relevant tests available.
It is important when you observe even a slight indication of being a victim that the situation is not pushed under the carpet as it were' but continue to monitor the observation and if you are a family member' you are in a better situation to help the person concerned. Even if you are the teacher' colleague or friend' there is equal responsibility to be able to make this observation and inform the family concerned of your observation. It may be felt as being meddlesome' but it is a risk worth taking.
Awareness of the bipolar disorder is gaining more ground than before but still there are many who are ignorant of the sickness and the severity depending on what type of bipolar disorder category the victim falls into. Even if it is mild it still needs treatment. In between all kinds of mood swings' the sufferer will have a normal range of moods. Often' they are under the misconception that the symptoms will go away and are of the opinion that it is a normal mood swing that everyone goes through. Over a period of time if it is not treated and managed' then it can become a fully blown bipolar disorder by which time it has gone out of control and by now treatment is also that much more difficult. Response to treatment is not always quick if neglected. The danger with bipolar disorder is that it can become life threatening with thoughts and attempts of suicide. This must be therefore be borne in mind and taken seriously.
When symptoms emerge in children the situation is worsened as diagnosing becomes more difficult and treatment more complex. In their case it will be more or less on self reported experiences as well as abnormalities observed and reported by family members and teachers. However' it is equally important to be alert and treat children with bipolar disorder as early as possible to avoid the situation getting out of hand and becoming a high risk situation with possible attempts of suicide.
First step is to consult a good psychiatrist with whose help the situation can be kept under control. It is very important to share with your psychiatrist as much information as you know about what the sufferer is going through so that a proper diagnosis and treatment can be given. |
