Along with bipolar disorder other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and substance misuse is high. Panic disorder' generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder are common anxiety disorders in bipolar disorder victims.
Substance misuse and mental health disorders are linked in such a way that one may be the cause of the other. Research has shown that victims of bipolar disorder are more prone to misuse of alcohol and other substances' as opposed to those with mental illness. Some of the commonly misused substances are illicit drugs' caffeine and nicotine. These substances will worsen the already difficult path to recovery as recurring illness is more difficult to be treated medically. The doctors are not able to realize that a person is both mentally ill' as well as under substance misuse unless the person is going to be honest with the doctor so that the doctor is informed of the problems. Without the proper knowledge the doctor will only be able to treat one condition while completely ignoring the other' which can only make the situation much worse.
There are common symptoms relative to other disorders which are similar' such as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. Therefore there are several significant symptom overlaps in these conditions. Family history is important for diagnosis as both disorders appear to run in families. Similarly it is difficult to tell the difference between depression and bipolar disorder in children' than in adults. Children with depression are often irritable than sad.
Bipolar disorder victims also suffer from eating disorders. This is usually a secondary symptom due to depression or anxiety. Therefore' weight gains and losses seem common to sufferers. Some of the eating disorders that can be found in those who are victims of bipolar disorder are anorexia' bulimia and compulsive overeating. Some sufferers may also have other self destructive behaviors such as alcoholism' drug addiction' self injury' cutting and self mutilation. For some it is easy to deal with physical pain than with emotional pain and they resort to self infected violence to remind that they are alive. It is equally important for the recovery process and treatment that these connected issues are addressed to make a proper diagnosis. Another disorder connected to eating disorder is `Body Dysmorphic Disorder’ which sufferers imagine is a physical flaw.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is yet another associated illness' which is unwelcome thoughts and images which a person feels driven to perform regardless of desire or compulsion. In extreme cases' these obsessions and compulsions may drive a person to take his/her life' without giving any time for anyone to be able to stop this from happening.
Because of the complex nature of the disorder' timely intervention and treatment should be given to every possible victim of bipolar disorder. |
