Anti-depressants are often prescribed by doctors to treat depression and related psychological disorders. They work on the long term in maintaining the chemical imbalance of the brain and often bring about many side effects in doing so. The main reason for this is all antidepressant drugs work on chemicals that are related to the nervous system' which in turn interact at various levels with various parts' organs and systems of our body. Therefore it is very difficult to nullify any side effects caused by antidepressant drugs' as well as other anti-psychotic drugs' as targeting the treatment of only the root cause is a very difficult task in such disorders.
Changes in dietary practices is something often associated with antidepressant drugs. Weight loss is a side effect of certain drugs' but not to a significant extent. Let’s take a look at some drugs that are believed to be associated with weight loss or gain:
Venlafaxine (Brand Name: Effexor): Reduces appetite for food.
Citalopram (Brand Name: Celexa): Is known to reduces appetite for sweets.
Duloxetine (Brand Name: Cymbalta): May reduce weight to some extent' but in some individuals weight gain has been observed.
Tranylcypromine Sulfate (Brand Name: Parnate): Decreases food intake
Amitryptiline' Maprotiline' Phenelzine Sulfate' Desipramine are some antidepressants associated with weight gain as opposed to weight loss.
Fluoxetine' Sertraline' Paroxetine' Fluvoxamine' Escitalopram' Venlafaxine' Duloxetine and Nefazodone do not cause weight gain or loss and are not considered to cause any dietary changes.
Some people believe antidepressants are very good at helping you to lose weight' but the above facts would show you that it is not so. Besides' there are many other side effects associated with antidepressants that would not make them ideal solutions for weight loss.
A lot of media campaigns on super pills that cause weight loss are in the market today' but many of them are not as effective as they preach. Also' none of them talk about the many side effects associated with such neural controlling drugs. And it should also be remembered that taking them without proper medical guidance can cause detrimental effects.
Overweight is a common problem among many Westerners' due to fast phased lifestyles and takeaway eating habits. People often don’t have time to follow strict diet regimes such as eating healthy food and regular exercise' therefore they resort to unconventional methods. But it should be stressed that this ‘easy way out’ often doesn’t create a sunny picture on the long run. If you want to achieve a balanced life with a healthy disposition' resort to the more conventional weight loss methods and feel secure about your health.
Summary: The belief that antidepressants are good weight loss pills is a common misconception brought about by media and it should be remembered that these drugs are associated with many side effects and are not as effective as they claim. |
