| How depression affects an adult |
Depression is a common sickness that can affect any person at any stage in life. According to research nearly 17 million to 20 million Americans are affected with clinical depression. Twice the number of women suffers from depression than men. Depression is first noted at an early age of late teens to mid twenties. Though depression can strike seniors known as later on-set depression' this can easily go undiagnosed due to lack of knowledge or not being aware that the person is suffering from such condition.
Depression is known as a serious condition and it has a negative impact on the person' as it affects the way the person thinks' feels and acts. On the contrary clinical depression can linger or persist' and cannot be easily taken away or moved out of the person’s life. Unless properly treated' it can bring much damage and suffering and can lead to ill-health or even suicide.
With age though older women suffer depression than men' the number decreases amongst women after menopause. However' depression is not a symptom for aging. How does depression affect adults? Many adults can experience depression due to loss of a loved one' retirement' emotional experiences' financial difficulties' loneliness or ill health. Also' restricted blood flow in the body known as ischemia may cause depression due to changes that take place in the body. This in return will prevent blood flow to the brain due to blood vessels becoming less flexible. As a result adults who have not had any history of depression may suffer from same and this is known as ‘vascular depression’. Those suffering from vascular depression are more prone to cardio-vascular diseases and stroke. Depression also often co-occurs with other illnesses' such as' diabetes' high blood pressure' stroke and cancer. As many adults face such diseases and social and economic difficulties' often this condition goes undetected by the physician and sufferer as well. Due to this people suffer depression right throughout their lives. Sadly though' depression is known to be commonly associated with suicide in adults. This is widely under recognized and under treated medical condition.
Depression like other illnesses has to be treated promptly. Left untreated can delay recovery process and lead to other ill health or mental or psychological conditions. Anti depressant medications and physiotherapy are effective medications for depression in adults. For many adults' combination of these medications have brought in good results and have found to be an effective way of treatment and prevention of a recurrence of depression in adults. |
