An Interview with Dr. Shelly Toltz on Low Vision.

Dr. Shelly Toltz is an Optometrist and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Low Vision.

Q.  What is Low Vision?

A.  Low Vision would be defined by the inability to be corrected by glasses, contacts or surgery to a level which would impede function for driving, reading, or everyday tasks.

Q.  What causes Low Vision?

A.  Low Vision can be caused by numerous eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or other trauma or disease to the eye as well as congenital disorders.

Q.  How do I know if I need bifocals?

A.  If you are having trouble seeing at both distance and near and you need a different correction or prescription for each than a bifocal can combine two prescriptions into one pair of glasses. Most people are now fit with progressive lenses which have no line and give a multitude of distances to help with near, intermediate and distance corrections. This is the preferred choice in lens design.

Q.  How can I stop glare at night or at a computer?

A.  Making sure that you have the proper prescription for each of these distances would be the first thing that should be checked. Anti-reflective coatings help with glare from lights and screens and can be a big help with eye fatigue. Dry eye could be another reason for nighttime and computer discomfort.

Q.  How often should I get a new pair of glasses?

A.  If you have normal healthy eyes, you should be checked every two years for your eye health and a new prescription. If your vision is changing or you are being followed for a medical or eye condition, yearly eye exams are recommended.

Q.  Do sunglasses really help to keep my eyes healthy?

A.  Sunglasses are probably the single most important thing you can do for your eyes in Colorado. The UV exposure in our climate and altitude is dangerous for the eye and can hasten cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye diseases.

Q.  What are the warning signs that a child might need glasses?

A.  If your child is squinting or tilting their head when they read or look at distance objects they may need vision correction. In addition if they are not keeping up with their school work it may be a reading problem due to their eyes. All children should have a baseline exam before entering school to rule out any problems which might prevent learning. Your eye doctor would then recommend the appropriate time for the next exam.
